ENLS VS - General Information

Emergency Neurological Life Support

Validation Study

The Emergency Neurological Life Support Validation Study (ENLS VS) is approved by the Western IRB for evaluation of knowledge gained from and retention after certification in ENLS. Participation is purely voluntary. Results will not be shared with anyone outside the study investigators, nor will they be used for promotion or remediation. If you have not taken ENLS before, this is a great opportunity! (Apologies, but those who have had any previous ENLS coursework are not qualified to participate.)

The procedure for ENLS VS is as follows:

            Step 1:     Registration (see below).
            Step 2:
Take the ENLS VS Pre-Training Examination. Online, 70 questions, 90 minutes, closed book. Must be taken 72 hours prior to either the live or online ENLS Course.
            Step 3:
    Attend ENLS Live Course (optional).
            Step 4:
Complete ENLS Certification Course. Online, self-paced, requires passing 14 exams at ≥70%.
            Step 5:
Take the ENLS VS Post-Training Examination. Online, 70 questions, 90 minutes, closed book. Must be taken 72 hours after ENLS Certification Course.
            Step 6:
Take the ENLS VS Latent Post-Training Examination. Online, 70 questions, 90 minutes, closed book. Must be taken 6 months after ENLS Certification Course.

Once Step 6 is complete, and it has been verified that the steps were completed within the specified time-frames, NCS will notify accrediting agency of certification status, and participants will attain ENLS certification free of charge.

Note: If a participant chooses to withdraw from ENLS VS but still wishes to become ENLS-certified, ENLS certification can be granted after payment for the ENLS course is received.

Note: If you are hosting a live course and will be participating in the Study, please download and fill out this Host Agreement and email it back to us - thank you!

ENLS Protocols

ENLS consists of 14 protocols. Each protocol was designed and written by neurointensivists and emergency medicine physicians.  These protocols are designed to provide the same advice an expert in neurocritical care would provide if you called the physician for a consult and asked, “What should I do in the first hour to best help this patient and hand them off to you?” The 14 ENLS protocols are:

  • Acute Non-Traumatic Weakness
  • Acute Ischemic Stroke
  • Airway, Ventilation and Sedation
  • Approach to the Comatose Patient
  • Intracerebral Hemorrhage
  • Intracranial Hypertension and Herniation
  • Meningitis and Encephalitis
  • Pharmacotherapy
  • Resuscitation Following Cardiac Arrest
  • Spinal Cord Compression
  • Status Epilepticus
  • Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury
