Neurointensivists Added to Leapfrog’s ICU Physician Staffing Definition of Intensivists for 2008

The Neurocritical Care Society is proud to announce that Neurologists and Neurosurgeons can now be recognized as Intensivists by the Leapfrog Group on their ICU Physician Staffing Sheet (IPS). The Leapfrog Group’s announcement provides: “Neurointensivists” are classified as neurologists and neurological surgeons who are board-certified in their primary specialty and who have completed a UCNS-certified fellowship training program in neurocritical care, or a physician who is board certified in neurocritical care. Existing physicians must obtain certification using the grandfathering process established by UNCS to be considered a neurointensivist. This new category of intensivists applies only to neuro ICUs”.  The Neurocritical Care Society has been in discussion with members of the Leapfrog Group since 2005. This landmark recognition of neurointensivists is crucial because the Leapfrog Group’s recommendations have impacted hospital ICU staffing practices. Please see the May 2008 issue of Currents for more details.
