**ACGME Accreditation since Jan 28th, 2025** We have two positions open for July 2025 as a newly accredited program. We welcome candidates from Neurology (Pediatric), Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Surgery or other Critical Care specialties. The mission of the Saint Louis University Neurocritical Care Fellowship Program is to provide a supportive yet challenging environment for trainees from multidisciplinary backgrounds to gain competency in the specialized care of critically ill neurology and neurosurgery patients. Our comprehensive education extends beyond neurology and neurosurgery, incorporating core principles of medical and surgical critical care to address the full spectrum of issues arising in critically ill neurological patients. As a clinically active program situated within a Level One Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, and Level Four Epilepsy Center, fellows will gain experience in managing a diverse and high-acuity patient population. This includes providing care to a large inner-city population, enabling fellows to hone their skills in a demanding clinical setting. Our program emphasizes excellence in clinical care, with a commitment to advancing clinical and translational research, supporting the education of residents and students, and developing leadership in intensive care unit management. Fellows will learn to work professionally and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, ensuring high-quality, patient-centered care. Aligned with the broader mission of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, our fellowship program strives for excellence in education, research, clinical care, and the improvement of community health. We achieve this by delivering evidence-based, compassionate care in the NeuroICU, while also providing holistic support to the families of our patients, respecting their cultural and religious beliefs within our diverse population. 1. The program provides exceptional training in the care of critically ill neurology and neurosurgery patients, utilizing advanced neuromonitoring and a multidisciplinary team of highly trained Neurocritical Care faculty. We accept candidates with accredited training in Neurology, Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, Surgery, and Specialty Critical Care fellowships, fostering a multidisciplinary learning environment. Fellows from these diverse backgrounds will also receive foundational training in medical and surgical critical care through collaborative educational efforts with trauma and other critical care service teams, alongside rotations in the medical, trauma, and surgical ICUs at SLU. 2. The program emphasizes cultural competence by providing fellows with significant experience treating a diverse inner-city population. It provides dedicated training in communication skills for difficult conversations, such as delivering bad news, establishing goals of care, and demonstrating cultural sensitivity in these discussions. 3. The program offers fellows opportunities to engage in clinical and translational research, with encouragement to participate in projects that advance neurocritical care. Fellows are mentored in conducting research and presenting findings at national conferences, fostering a commitment to lifelong learning and scholarly contribution. 4. The program provides training in administrative and leadership skills essential for managing a neurocritical care unit. This includes opportunities to lead rounds, participate in unit and hospital committees, write ICU protocols, lead quality improvement initiatives, and analyze quality metrics. 5. The program equips fellows with dedicated teaching responsibilities, including leading didactic sessions, bedside teaching, and mentoring residents and medical students. Fellows receive evaluations on their teaching performance to enhance their educational impact and foster a culture of learning. 6. Recognizing the physical and emotional toll of caring for critically ill and dying patients, the program fosters a supportive atmosphere with an open-door policy. It integrates a robust wellness and mental health support system to mitigate burnout and promote fellow well-being.
