Dear colleagues:

We reach out to you today overwhelmed with emotions due to the events of the last week – indignation, sadness, fear, frustration.

As the United States and the entire world began to see hopeful glimmers of a return to some form of “normalcy,” the unjust death of George Floyd in Minnesota rocked us to our core. And the ripple effects expand beyond the borders of the US, as we have seen protests and activism spread to other parts of the world in recent days.

NCS has always taken pride in how we seek and encourage inclusivity – our international nature, our multidisciplinary nature. Even looking across our NCS volunteer leaders, we are proud that NCS has a diverse collection of individuals who can represent so many perspectives. This is what makes NCS strong.

To solidify our commitment to diversity into the culture and fabric of our society, NCS approved a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Statement in December 2019.

NCS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core attributes of the Neurocritical Care Society. Our goal is to cultivate an environment where everyone is welcomed and included, based on the firm belief that diversity is valuable and fosters innovation that enables us to achieve our mission; to serve our members as well as addressing the needs of an increasingly diverse society. The Neurocritical Care Society strives to support its members in providing high quality and equitable care for the patients and communities we serve. We also aim to support all members in their research, collaboration, training, education and advocacy efforts.

As a Society and as fellow healthcare providers, we fight for life – providing hope when we can; providing comfort when we need to. And as a Society, we fully recognize the power of coming together to represent, advocate, and defend.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Indeed, change in this environment is inevitable, and our actions and attitudes will be the testament to our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Together, we remain firmly dedicated to being the change we wish to see in the world.

Respectfully,
