The University of Florida Health and Shands Hospital Neurocritical Care Fellowship program offers a one or two year training program accredited by the UCNS (United Council of Neurological specialties).

The training program provides the opportunity for fellows to manage patients with life threatening neurological and neurosurgical critical illnesses. The fellows will rotate through our brand new neurosciences ICU, consisting of 32 beds and housed in the new state of the art neuromedicine tower at UF-Health Shands located in Gainesville, Florida. The training further provides the fellows with the clinical skill set necessary to manage critically ill patients. This includes, but is not limited to airway management and intubation, ventilator management, central and arterial line placement, flexible bronchoscopy, hemodynamic management, bedside ultrasonography, brain oximetry interpretation, EVD management, multi-modality monitoring, and continuous cEEG interpretation.

One unique aspect of our program is the diversity in educational background, skill sets and experience of the core faculty, including 5 neurology trained neurointensivists from Harvard, Yale, Duke and Mayo, as well as critical care faculty from anesthesiology critical care medicine with expertise in neuroanesthesiology. The unit is staffed 24/7 with a team of advanced practice providers and residents (neurology, neurosurgery, anesthesiology/CCM) as well as neurocritical care and critical care fellows. Attendings oversee the ICU 24/7 and there is always a critical care attending in house.
The fellows participate in numerous educational activities, as part of the hospital wide multidisciplinary critical care educational pool. This includes a weekly neurocritical care lecture series, daily multidisciplinary critical care didactics (hospital-wide combined CCM), journal club (monthly), neurology and critical care grand rounds. The training provides clinical critical care and neurological critical care, commensurate with UCNS requirements.
