Salary Range:

As part of our long-term commitment to building capacity in the neurotrauma service, Weill Cornell Medicine Neurosurgery is sponsoring a one-year fellowship in global neurocritical care for a senior trainee, fellow, or new attending. The position is located at Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI), the national neurosurgery hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The fellowship is focused on three aspects of our capacity-building program:

Clinical: Responsibilities include conducting daily rounds in the 16-bed neurosurgical ICU as well as in the 16-bed neurosurgical step-down unit with the staff from MOI, including nurses, residents, and registrars. You will be expected to have weekly meetings with local faculty in anesthesiology and neurosurgery.

Education: Bedside teaching of residents and nurses is a core component of this fellowship. In addition, you will organize regular teaching conferences for neurosurgical and anesthesiology staff.

Research: You will be tasked with supervising a local registrar who maintains newly developed databases on the care of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) patients. Data is available for research and you are expected to complete at least one publication during your fellowship year.
Weekly Skype calls are held with all stakeholders in the United States, United Kingdom, and locally.

The position pays an adequate stipend commensurate with the local cost of living. We have had four previous fellows, one of whom is currently resident in Dar-es-Salaam. Two additional students (one from the Netherlands, the other from the U.S.) have completed their Master’s degree theses from this project.
