The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Department of Neurosurgery has established an advanced fellowship training program in Neurocritical Care. The selected candidate will serve in a one-year position. 

UTHealth, in collaboration with Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, utilizes state-of-the art technology and facilities. Our advanced Neurocritical Care team members are nationally recognized as leaders in the field, provide a complete range of advanced procedures, and are highly skilled in complex patient management. We provide high acuity care for patients with life-threatening neurological conditions such as ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage, status epilepticus, traumatic brain and spine injury, brain tumors, and other neurological disorders with multiple-organ failure. In addition to our high volume Comprehensive Stroke and Cerebrovascular Surgery Programs, Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center is the highest volume trauma center in the country.

During fellowship, the candidate will lead the primary team managing all complex cases in the 32 bed Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (NSICU). They will also rotate through our affiliated 8 bed NSICU at Memorial Hermann-Southwest, where they will serve as the junior attending under the supervision of our Neurocritical Care faculty members. The candidate will be trained in performing all ICU procedures including endotracheal intubations, bronchoscopy, both invasive and semi-invasive hemodynamic monitoring, advanced ICU sonography, and central/arterial line placement. Our unit is equipped with multimodality monitoring capability including ICP monitors and external ventricular drains, continuous video EEG monitoring, continuous cardiac output, cerebral blood flow, and digitalized brain oximetry (PbtO2) monitors connected to patient bedside monitoring. 

The candidate will spend approximately 8 months working in the NSICU under the supervision of attending physicians. They will perform daily rounds with faculty, rotating residents, medical students, and advanced practice providers. The candidate will manage critically ill neurologic and neurosurgical patients. The candidate will also participate in a series of weekly didactic conferences within the department. Independent research projects are encouraged and protected research time will be available.

The candidate will have the opportunity to manage patients in various critical care units including Medical, Surgical/Trauma, and Burn ICUs. They are offered a number of electives including Endovascular Neurosurgery, Anesthesiology, Pulmonology, Stroke, EEG, TCD, and Neuroradiology. They will also have the opportunity to work on the nation’s first Mobile Stroke Unit.
