Academic Neuroscience Nursing (Dartmouth-Hitchcock)

Academic Neuroscience Nursing

Our Neuroscience Units offer nurses a diverse patient population which provides an excellent learning environment and the opportunity for professional development. Our robust new hire program sets each nurse up for success and allows the opportunity for nurses to “cross-train” within neurosciences to broaden their career. Our nurses have the opportunity to practice in three distinct units:

Neurosciences/ENT Unit
A 21-bed general medical-surgical level unit specializing in caring for patients with stroke, epilepsy, brain and/or spinal cord tumors/injuries, movement disorders, laryngectomies and tracheostomies.

Neuroscience Special Care Unit (NSCU)
A 10-bed continuous care environment with full bedside monitoring capabilities. Nurses care for patients with complex medical, surgical, respiratory and multi-trauma needs including care for:

• Post-operative neuroscience
• Complex ENT and trauma
• Acute strokes
• Continuous cardiac monitoring
• Cardiac drips
• Ventriculostomies
• Lumbar drains

Neuroscience Critical Care Unit (NCCU)
A 10-bed critical care unit that cares for higher acuity medical and surgical patients, some with complex respiratory issues. Care includes:

• Post-operative neuroscience
• Neurotrauma
• Acute strokes
• Post-thrombectomy
• Intracranial pressure monitoring
• Ventilators
• Lumbar drains
• High alert medications

If you are a nurse looking for that “right fit” for your next career move, your time will be well spent if you continue reading. The Dartmouth-Hitchcock organization is a unique place for nurses. We are one of the few locations throughout the United States that can offer nurses some of the most diverse, sophisticated and rewarding nursing careers, but we can also claim an outstanding quality of life.

Why are we so unique? We are a world-renowned medical center set right in the middle of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We recognize that “quality of life” means different things to different people, but we are pretty confident since we have beautiful, rural and suburban housing options, world-class primary, secondary and graduate schools, hundreds of lakes, thousands of miles of hiking trails and some of the best skiing in the country. This all means you can be a happy nurse with more quality time with friends, family, pets or maybe just quiet hikes by yourself.

These are just a few highlights of being a nurse at Dartmouth-Hitchcock.
