Upstate University Hospital/Upstate Medical University is currently recruiting 2 neurointensivists. The neurointensivist will join four board certified Neurointensivists and 13 advance practice providers. The position will be tailored to match the overall career interests of the individual.
The Neurointensive care unit at Upstate is the largest Neuro-ICU outside of Manhattan, with 27 dedicated Neuro-ICU beds staffed with fellowship-trained and board certified neurointensivists as well as neuroscience/stroke and critical care certified nurses. Our Neurointensive care unit is equipped with the latest multimodality monitoring equipment for ICP/CPP, brain O2 and temperature. Additional advance monitoring include invasive and non-invasive cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring, NIRS monitoring, continuous EEG monitoring with quantitative analysis, a portable CT scanner, a robotic TCD machine, 2 multiprobe GE bedside ultrasound, 2 dual screen glidescope with bronchoscope attachment, and pupillometers. The hospital has state of the art intraoperative MRI-cerebral angiography hybrid suite for complex neurosurgical and cerebrovascular cases, and an additional biplane angiography suite allowing for two simultaneous thrombectomy activations. We have a UCNS/CAST/ACGME-accredited Neurocritical care fellowship program (approved for 2 positions per year). Two neuro-ICU teams take care of patients, each team staffed with a dedicated Neuro ICU Attending, a fellow and/or resident, and advance practice providers with ENLS certifications.
Upstate is the first and only academic Comprehensive Stroke Center in the region, with an active telestroke network of 12 hospitals covering the whole central New York. Upstate is also the only Level 4 Epilepsy center, and the region’s only Level 1 Pediatric and Adult Trauma Center. The neurointensive care service enjoys strong collaboration with Neurosurgery, Emergency medicine, Neuroradiology, Neurorehabilitation, Cardiology and Trauma.
The successful candidate is expected to be an excellent clinician and educator, capable of leading a large team with students, residents, fellows, and advanced nurse practitioners/physician assistants. (S)he will enjoy collaborations with colleagues in other critical care units and attention to quality improvement, patient outcomes, and patient centered care supported by a robust institutional infrastructure.
In addition, we are interested in recruiting individuals who aim to pursue an academic career and develop independently funded research programs in clinical or translational research. Upstate Medical University is a member of Neuro-NEXT/Strokenet and SIREN funded by NIH, and currently participates in the following multicenter trials: SleepSMART, ASPIRE, SATURN, SISTER, AWARE II, BOOST-3, ICECAP.
Candidate requirement:
1. Must possess or be eligible for unrestricted New York State Medical License
2. US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card holder
Prerequisites for Neurocritical care:
1. Neurocritical care fellowship training in UCNS/CAST or ACGME-accredited program
2. Board certification/Board eligible in Neurocritical Care
3. Proficient with standard ICU procedures, advance airway management, EEG interpretation, TCD interpretation
