The Department of Neurology at the UC Irvine School of Medicine offers a two-year neurocritical care fellowship accredited by the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties fellowship. The training is based at UC Irvine Medical Center, Orange County's only Level I trauma center and certified comprehensive stroke center.

Video EEG capabilities with off-site access to the recording allow for 24-hour monitoring of epilepsy patients. There are 12 dedicated neurointensive care unit beds. Our team of neurointensivists includes neurocritical care fellowship-trained physicians from the Department of Neurology.

The 24-month curriculum includes rotations in other intensive care units, anesthesiology department, epilepsy/EEG division, and interventional pulmonology. Elective rotations are negotiable depending on each fellow's interests. The fellow is expected to assume an increasing level of responsibilities and eventually lead the rounds with a team of midlevel practitioners and residents. Fellows are expected to teach residents and medical students and lead the journal club.

They also are expected to master various procedural skills, including traditional and ultrasound-guided central venous line placement, arterial line placement, multi-modality monitoring, lumbar puncture, and endotracheal intubation.

The Fellowship program is designed to provide extensive training in patient safety, quality improvement, quality monitoring and reporting.
